Saturday, September 17, 2011

The three forest rangers of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), of San Ignacio, Manay, Davao Oriental namely: Pacquito Gica, Mario Tasic, and Abilino Abaniel survived from ambush on August 21, 2010, 2:00 pm, at Sitio Danaw, Lianga, Surigao Del Sur.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Regional Office, ordered the members of the Anti-Illegal Logging Task Force including the three staffs from San Ignacio, 4 from Baganga, and 2 from Lupon; representing Region XI together with the personnel from Region IX and XII to go to Comval Province with the aim to minimize illegal cutting of trees

At 11:30 am, August 20, 2010, they suddenly received an urgent order from Provincial Environment and Natural Resource Officer ( PENRO ) through a phone call, saying that there were illegally cut logs from Sitio Danaw,Liangga, Surigao Del Sur under CENRO Liangga that should have to be confiscated. The group proceeded immediately to the reported site escorted by thirty PNP’s and fifty militaries riding two "forwards".

On August 21, 2010, 10:30 am, they arrived at the reported site, 22 Km. from Lianga Central, and successfully confiscated 400 cubics of logs which were cut illegally.

After scaling, they receded right away. On their way home,1 Km. from the site. the worst thing happened. They were ambushed by certain gun men. Chief of police Christopher Mazo, was the person who died in that ambush.

This site is called as Rebel Infested Area, since almost of the people who occupied the area are NPA’s who depend only to illegal logging as their livelihood.

The family and co-worker of the staffs were very thankful that they were safe, “I thought that was the end of our lives. It was so horrible when I saw how our companion was killed.”, as Mario Tasic revealed their horrible story.
